6 Methods To Remove Dirt and Debris From Your Hot Tub

No matter how much you take care of your hot tub, there’s always going to be some dirt, debris, or sand on the bottom of your shell. And if you are like me, you hate that.

Luckily for us, there are a lot of ways you can remove dirt, debris, or sand from the bottom of your hot tub, without draining it. Here are the 7 methods that you can use to do that.

Can You Clean The Bottom Of Your Hot Tub Without Draining it?

Yes, you can clean the bottom of your hot tub without having to drain and re-fill the hot tub. There are a lot of tools that you can use for this. The process takes less than 5 minutes and you won’t lose any hot tub water.

If you have a small amount of dirt in your hot tub, then removing it can be easier. If your hot tub is full of sand or dirt, it can take a while until you fully get rid of it, and you might need more tools. But, whatever the case is, you can still do it without losing any water.

You can even clean the whole hot tub without draining the water. You should drain your hot tub only if you have water chemistry problems, or if it’s been a while since you changed the water.

How To Get Rid of Dirt and Debris From Your Hot Tub?

Most of these methods include you buying an external tool. So, get ready to spend some money.

1.Use a Spa Wand

You can use a spa wand to clean the bottom of your hot tub.

Let’s starts with the basics, you can use a spa wand to remove dirt from the bottom of your hot tub shell. I mostly use a spa wand whenever I have small spots of dirt in my hot tub. It does wonders for small spots of dirt, but it isn’t as effective for larger spots.

It is a manual tool, so you need to do all the work. Most of the spa wands come with a tip that’s included on the top of the tool, use that, that’s what picks the dirt.

Here’s how to use it: Just put the spa wand inside the hot tub water, locate the dirt, and start pumping. Once the air goes off, the tool starts to pick the dirt. You have to aim the tip the whole time. Keep pumping until there’s no more dirt left. After you get rid of the dirt, take the spa wand off the water, and clean its filter.

2. Use Pool Toys

Using pool toys such as a water gun is a good way to get rid of dirt from your hot tub.

Pool toys can be fun to play with. But, did you know you can use them to remove sand from your hot tub? Most of the pool toys are designed to suck the water, and then by pushing a button, they release the water.

You can do the same thing, but instead of sucking water, you can suck the dirt on the water, and then just release the dirt outside of the hot tub. Cool, right? I prefer to use water guns or water squirters for this.

This process can take a while, so ask your kids to do it, they can have fun and clean the bottom of your hot tub at the same time.

3. Use a Garden Hose

This is the cheapest and quickest way to get rid of dirt in your hot tub. The downside? Your arm will get wet, and you might lose some water.

A garden hose is extremely effective if you want to remove sand from your hot tub.

Take the garden hose, put one side of the hose outside of the hot tub, and put the other one inside of the hot tub. For this to work, you have to do a water siphon.

Here’s how to do that— place the top of your garden hose inside the hot tub jets for 2-3 seconds, and then take it out. While taking the hose out of the jets, place your finger on the top (tip) of your hose.

With your hand, move the tip of the garden hose towards the dirt. Once the hose is near the dirt, remove your finger, and the hose will start sucking the water & dirt and releasing it at the other end of the hose(that is located outside of the hot tub).

Keep moving your hand until you fully remove the dirt. This will suck a lot of water, so make sure to do it fast.

4. Use Jet Vacuum

This is a more pricey option. You need to buy a jet vacuum, and you need to have a garden hose. The jet vacuum will suck all of the dirt, and place it inside the bag that it comes with.

Here’s how this works: Connect the garden hose with the jet vacuum, but don’t start the garden hose, yet. If you start the garden hose while the jet vacuum is outside of the hot tub water, you will get all wet, so avoid doing that.

Place the jet vacuum inside the water, and then start the garden hose. The garden hose gives the jet vacuum pressure and using that pressure the vacuum picks the dirt. Once everything is working, start to move the vacuum towards the dirt. Clean the hot tub bottom like you would clean your house floor with a vacuum.

One thing to remember, when you remove the jet vac (after you clean it), flip it upside down, that way the dirt stays in the bag, and it stops the tool from spraying everywhere. After that, turn off the garden hose, and empty the bag.

5. Use a Grit gritter

The grit gritter is a tool/toy that is specially made to remove debris from your hot tub. It works the same as using pool toys, but it’s a lot of times faster.

Here’s how this works: The grit gritter has a design that looks like a water bottle, but it comes with a tip on top of the toy. You just have to squeeze the bottom of the toy and it will suck up the dirt.

The dirt goes inside of the toy, so once you are done you will have to clean the toy. It’s easy to use, you can bathe and clean the hot tub at the same time.

6. Use a Turkey Blaster

Yes, you can use a turkey blaster to get rid of your hot tub dirt. The turkey blaster is mostly used in your kitchen, but it’s a very versatile tool. It does wonders if you are dealing with small spots of debris, but it would take you a long time to clean the whole hot tub shell. So, only use it if you have small spots of dirt.

Here’s how to use it: The turkey blaster comes with a bulb at the top. Squeeze the bulb, and hold it still. Place the open tip of the tool on top of the dirt (inside the water), and then release the bulb.

The tool will suck up the dirt. Take the turkey blaster out of the water and then squeeze it again to remove the dirt from the tool. Repeat this process.  Make sure to don’t squeeze the tool twice while it’s still in the water, that would release the dirt again inside the hot tub.

Once you use the turkey blaster inside the hot tub, I recommend to keep using it only for your hot tub. You don’t want to re-use the same turkey blaster in your kitchen, right? Gross.
