Do Hot Tubs Attract Spiders (& How to Get Rid of Them)

If you are just like me, then you don’t like bugs. Most of the bugs are not harmful. But, when I am relaxing in the hot tub, I don’t want to worry about bugs floating next to me.

I saw a lot of people reporting about having spiders in their hot tub, so that got me thinking– do hot tubs attract spiders? I made a few tests and did a little research, here’s what I found out:

Hot tubs don’t attract spiders. Spiders are attracted to bugs. But, if you have many bugs in your hot tub, that can attract spiders in your hot tub. Get rid of bugs to get rid of spiders.

But, that’s not all, there are a lot of other things you should know:

How Do I Keep Spiders Out of My Hot Tub?

There are a lot of ways to keep spiders out of your hot tub. Here are a few things that you could try:

Get Rid of Spiders Manually

If you see spiders in your hot tub, then maybe you brought them up there. What do I mean? The spider could have been in your bathing suits. And when you dipped in the water, the spider could have started floating.

If that’s the case, then you don’t have a spider/bug problem in your hot tub. Just take a broom and move the spider outside of your hot tub.  Check the hot tub after a few days, if you don’t see any spiders then you are good to go. If you see spiders, then check the other steps down below.

Clean the Hot Tub

If the spiders are floating on your hot tub water, then cleaning/shocking your hot tub could help you get rid of them.  Check your pH levels. If you see that you have a low amount of chemicals then add chlorine or bromine.  Make sure to clean the hot tub often. You should also clean the surroundings of the hot tub.

Where There Are Insects There Are Spiders

Spiders are not attracted to humans or hot water. Spiders are attracted to bugs. Most of the spiders make their webs in trees. Why? Because that’s the place where they can find most of the bugs.

If you have different bugs and pests in your hot tub, then that can attract the spiders. Getting rid of the other bugs means that you will get rid of the spiders at the same time.

One way to get rid of insects is to shut down the lights of your hot tub. Especially at night. Make sure to clean your food leftovers, and clean the surroundings of your hot tub.

Use Lemon

A traditional way to get rid of spiders in your hot tub is to use lemon. Spiders don’t like the smell of lemon or any other citrus fruits. Get a lemon peel, and rub it on the sides of your hot tub. This will keep the spiders away from your hot tub. You can also use peppermint if you don’t want to use a lemon.

Use a Web Remover

It’s better to be proactive than reactive. If you see that you have spider webs in your hot tub, then it’s recommended to get rid of them. There are two ways you can get rid of web spiders. You can get rid of them manually or use a web remover.

While using the web remover, make sure to not drop it into water. You don’t want different chemicals mixing in the water.

Seal Any Cracks

Most of the spiders lay their eggs inside a crack. If you have an old hot tub that has cracks on the exterior side then seal those cracks. You can use a crack filler or a caulk. Even if you don’t have spiders, it’s still a good idea to seal hot tub cracks.

Most of the time spiders don’t lay eggs inside a hot tub. Most of the spiders lay their eggs in a dry, warm and secure place. And that’s what a hot tub is. But, the pump noise and vibrations make them think that the hot tub isn’t a safe place.

While that is true, it’s better to be safe than sorry. So, if you don’t like the idea of spiders in your hot tub, make sure to follow the tips I gave earlier to get rid of spiders:

  • Use Pepper Mint
  • Get Rid of Other Bugs

The chances of this happening are very low. But, if see that spiders have lay eggs inside of your hot tub then don’t worry. Here’s what you should do:

Don’t crush the egg sac: If you crush the spider egg sac then that could make the situation even worse. That will send all the tiny spiderlings everywhere, making it impossible for you to clean.

Use a Vacuum:  If you know where the egg sac is then use a vacuum to get rid of it. The vacuum will completely suck the egg sac, and lower the chances of spreading the eggs.
